It’s a problem if a trade organization operates like a “Cartel” as one NYT journalists calls the National & State Associations of Realtors

Step 1.

If you haven’t, better educate yourself on the monumental industry changes.

Step 2.

Make an informed decision about whether to remain tied to an additional set of rules—rules that duplicate what we’re already bound to, but then self-interestedly to the executives, constrain our freedoms to practice real estate.

Step 3.

When you choose to leave the California Association of Realtors and the National Association of Realtors, be sure to sign up for @REContractsShop—because that’s the only thing you’ll need right away.

Step 4.

Maintain your MLS-Only membership through your local board. When prompted, simply decline the optional CAR and NAR subscriptions. Most local boards will respect your choice—if yours doesn’t, let us know and we’ll gladly provide a list of boards that do.

The Truth About NAR & CAR 🚨

For decades, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) and California Association of Realtors (CAR) have controlled real estate—with growing concerns. Once seen as protectors of agents, they've increasingly prioritized profits, enforcing outdated rules, harassing members, and silencing dissent.

They manipulate agents into paying fines up to $15,000 that only benefits the association; the corrupt leadership scandals and abusive hearings also make the organizations block competition and transparency. Despite claiming to protect stakeholders, they’ve become gatekeepers of an industry that no longer needs them.

Thanks to laws like the Catright Act, many MLSs are now independent of NAR/CAR, and more states are following suit. Realtors deserve better—fair policies, open dialogue, and real reform. Even the nonprofit status of associations is under scrutiny, and the term Realtor may soon carry more baggage than benefit as realtors are full of anxiety for if they’re next. But for now, we’re keeping it since it’s commonly referred to the agents and brokers who represent clients vs themselves.

Large Broker #1 Anonymous: We all want a better option over CAR and NAR but there isn’t one; it’s really just the forms.

Broker #2 Jason Haber of Compass: “Are forms such a vexing issue that a lawyer can't recreate the standard CAR forms and deploy them in the market? I'm at a disadvantage on forms because in NYC we only use attorneys to write and revise contracts.  As a result we dont get into them in the same way as much of the country.”
